Mission Accomplished

Michael Yon has stated with all confidence that the Iraq War is over. The levels of violence post-Surge have steadily decreased and an air of uneasy normality has settled over Baghdad:
The Iraq war is over. Barring the unforeseen, the darkest days are behind, though we are still losing soldiers to low-level fighting with enemies [...]

Quote of the Day

“The Springboks are not all powerful! The Soccer World Cup is! That is how we will express ourselves as a nation. The Springbok is a side issue. We are now in the post-Springbok period,?

—The inimitable and idiotic Butana Komphela, complaining vociferously about the coverage devoted to rugby by Afrikaans newspapers.
Not one to hold himself back, [...]

Putting Lipstick on a Very Pretty Pig

The designers of the new DA logo have finally rebounded from the obvious criticism on their design; ie that it was a shameless copy of Obama’s. In the article, Fred Roed, the head marketing guy at Ideate, makes several bold claims in defense of the logo. Two of which I must take issue with. Firstly, [...]

COPEing With Change

I had an article in Friday’s Pretoria News discussing some of changes in South African politics resulting from the formation of COPE (a truly hideous name, by the way). I think the conclusion is worth restating:

Shilowa and Lekota’s experience in government will be mixed blessing when dealing with an electorate that craves change. If they [...]

DA: Change We Can’t Believe In

Darren pointed me at the DA party’s new website which, while admittedly a placeholder, looks remarkably like Obama’s own site. Of particular note are the two party logos.

Right down to the stripes it’s a little tough to imagine that the DA came up with what is effectively a straight clone of Obama’s logo all on [...]

The Highway of Heroes

This is the first time I’ve heard anything about it, but apparently highway 401 in Canada, the pathway on which all Canadian troops who have fallen will travel when arriving home, has seen the emergence of a grassroots movement to honour them:

The stretch of Highway 401 running from CFB Trenton into Toronto is routinely lined [...]

Remembrance Day

To quote the famous adage by Plato: Only the dead have seen the end of war.
War is as intrinsic to our world as love, but it’s always important, perhaps unlike love, to remember the brave fallen, irrespective of their creed, colour or campaign.

PS
Emil Jung has a pretty good piece on it.

Got Change?

I have concluded that many of my friends, American and not, are stupid. Not in the sense that they have drool slipping from their slackjaws, but in the sense that Obama’s victory has issued forth this torrent of back-slapping “we did it!” struggle speak. Yes, he won, and he didn’t just win because of the [...]
