Kosovo & Why the World Is Selfish

The recent declaration of independence by Kosovo has left many large states in a diplomatic fluster. Russia condemns it, the Chinese frown upon it, and the Americans welcome it with open arms. Serbia is understandably upset about the whole thing and are rioting like there’s no tomorrow. Truly just another day in the Balkans…
I don’t [...]

The FBJ & Freedom of Association

There has been plenty of ink spilled this weekend over Jacob Zuma’s decision to address a meeting of the Forum of Black Journalists (FBJ), after white reporters covering the event were thrown out the building. The general consensus is that the FBJ is racist and bad, and now Radio 702 has officially filed a complaint [...]

Where Are All the Clever Comrades?

In the face of all this ‘moaning’ by white folks in SA, many pro-ANC peons have crawled out of their holes and loudly denounced us as ‘cowards’ for not shutting up and dealing with the world’s highest murder rate, blackouts, rampant corruption and so on in obedient silence. The old guard struggled so hard for [...]

Does Democracy Work in Africa?

(Author’s note: This article was originally published 18 February 2008 by CiPS.)
GG Njuguna Ngengi was one of the first to die in the Kenyan crisis. On 2 January, the controversial politician was addressing a town meeting when he was attacked by a mob of armed youths, shot with an arrow and then hacked to death. [...]

Selling Your Vote

Browsing CNN, I came across an interview with novelist John Grisham, which included the following quote:

“I think what the Republicans have done in past elections is brilliant. Because, they’ve convinced a lot of people to vote for them against their own economic self-interest, and they’ve done that by skillfully manipulating a handful of social issues, [...]

An Argument for War

During my still-brief period writing for commentary, readers will notice that I write about war, a lot. Indeed it’s even mentioned in my about page. Unsurprisingly I’m more on the hawkish side of the fence. Given the appropriate levels of power, I would likely be seen as a war-mongering buffoon, single-handedly destroying the freedoms my [...]

Link for the Day

I recently discovered Smoke & Mirrors, an excellent South African blog promoting rationalism and skepticism, and featuring sharp attacks on superstition, conspiracy theories, and religious extremists. For instance, here’s their take on The Secret, a pseudoscientific self-help tract that annoys me every time I see how many copies are being bought by gullible suckers at [...]

Not Cleverer Enough

What Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwe Sonjica claimed she said:
“I was presenting a 12-minute speech and that speech did not say ‘go to bed, go to bed, go to bed’,” said Sonjica, adding that Democratic Alliance politician Leon heckled her, asking what happened when the lights were turned off.
“I was chastising Tony Leon, and [...]

Al Qaeda Junior

Coalition forces have seized video material in a raid which evidently features a score of young boys ‘training’ in what can only be described as Al Qaeda Junior. Practising with assault rifles and RPG’s, staging kidnappings and generally preparing to be the next generation of ruthless killers in the name of Allah is one thing, [...]

A Requiem for the Scorpions

(Author’s note: This article was originally published 5 February 2008 by the Centre for International Political Studies.)
On 19 January, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) met in Midrand. The skies above the conference were dark grey, as if to reflect the sombre mood of the country. South Africa was in the grip of a crippling [...]

So Close, and Yet…

…so very, very far to go. Afghanistan has long been ignored in the general media channels and shoved to the wayside in favour of the giant problems that occurred in Iraq the past several years. But that doesn’t make the reality of the situation any less substantial. Afghanistan is every bit as violent as Iraq, [...]

Back Once More

It’s one of the inevitabilities of life, I suppose, that even after a three month absence from posting I’m still finding it hard to come up with the right words for a post. There is just so much to say, yet so few ways to say it, that it’s almost easier to say nothing at [...]

Football Fumblings

Bafana Bafana recently drew 1-1 to Senegal, effectively booting us out of the AFCON championship, bottom of our group. To add insult to injury, some of Senegal’s top players, including Bolton striker El Hadj Diouf, were not even playing. And we’re hosting what competition in 2010?
I’m not really so much disappointed in our team’s hopeless [...]
