The Russia Analogy

I recently read an article on Russia for one of my politics courses, and was vaguely perturbed by the numerous similarities with South Africa. For one thing, they share our opaque political process and anxieties over the succession issue:

The political succession remains a key source of concern and anxiety for Russia’s political elite and the [...]

States, Markets & the Environment

Ian Gilfillan responds to some of my recent posts on environmentalism.
Overall, his response is pretty reasonable, though I do have some nitpicks. I would love to be able to walk to work in the morning, but I also love the freedom of being to find employment or companionship outside my immediate locale. The simple fact [...]

Up, Up And Away!

As soon as I’ve started getting the hang of this blogging thing, I must say my temporary farewells. I’m off to Onishibetsu in Hokkaido, Japan, for a year of teaching the little nips how to throw rocks at liberals and to pronounce “Anti-Islamofascism”, or something along those lines…
I expect to be offline for a good [...]

The Youtube Debate

The Democratic Youtube debate sounds like a silly idea in theory, but by all accounts it was a great success. Even hardcore Republicans enjoyed it.
Given all that, I can’t help but wonder – since we’re sort-of in “primary season” ourselves – what the likelihood is of us ever seeing something similar in this country. And [...]

Link for the Day

Megan McArdle on the economics of Harry Potter. A perceptive article, plus it’s hilarious to see how many Guardian readers get terribly offended at the idea of applying adult reasoning to a children’s book.

I’m Back…

And since I’ve been without an internet connection for the past week, I’ve been isolated from current events and pretty much have no idea what’s going on in the world. So I’m going to pull the ultimate cheesy desperation move; the weapon of last resort for many an uninspired blogger. I’m going to write about [...]

Withdrawal Pains Continued…

A few days ago I wrote on how a withdrawal from Iraq by the US military would be the worst thing for it. In a recent article by Victor Davis Hanson, he highlights how this will have far-reaching effects both within the Middle East and the United States. In the article he correctly highlights how [...]

Robert McBride Gets R1000 Bail

That’s right, he’s been released pending trial for several crimes, including fraud and impeding the ends of justice. I’m sure that’ll teach him not to intimidate witnesses again! On the plus side, it’s refreshing to see that this isn’t being swept under the carpet, never to be heard from again.

Earlier this month the Johannesburg High [...]

The Very Real Results of Arrowhead Ripper

That evil news corporation Fox News has the latest to aid my tirade on the Iraq War ‘withdrawal’ fervour:
The U.S. command said Wednesday the highest-ranking Iraqi in the leadership of Al Qaeda in Iraq has been arrested, adding that information from him indicates the group’s foreign-based leadership wields considerable influence over the Iraqi chapter.
Will [...]

The Bitter Truth About Iraq

It seems the prevailing school of thought within Democrat and certain Republican spheres that a withdrawal from Iraq would be the wisest political choice for America. To be certain it would save many American lives that may potentially be lost in combat. But the truth of the matter is that a withdrawal would be the [...]

Why it’s Ok to be Biased

I always find it intriguing when friends or colleagues put so much stock in making others believe they are unbiased or objective. Be it politics, philosophy, music, religion or some such in-depth intellectual pursuit. I get the impression that often folks are afraid to voice their true opinions for fear of being isolated or dismissed [...]

Iran’s Vigilance Against the West…

Yep, that’s right. Iran has managed to detain some 14 dangerous spies who were attempting to infiltrate the great nation in order to spy on their secrets. Americans? British? The detainees remain tight-lipped, giving only name, rank and serial number. Oh, they’re also squirrels:

“In recent weeks, intelligence operatives have arrested 14 squirrels within Iran’s borders,” [...]
