just to clarify... we don't count hits. grandMasterkrust is correct -- we initially started counting page impressions and then swapped this to unique users for the main count. UU's is the universal way traffic is counted. HOWEVER -- page impressions are still a valid indication of "activity" so we'll reintroduce PI's as another indication at a later stage together with other metrics such as "most linked to" (ala technorati and google style), fast movers, most commented and others etc etc... what we want to do is keep the main measurement as UU's but introduce others too because there are many ways to measure blog activity and authority...

we are completely open to suggestions however. You'll notice we've become regular blog trolls to get feedback from various bloggers :-)

neil- the talking points bit needs a bit more work...but we hope to release it soon... !

>> Amatomu (currently) uses the number of hits to measure the top blogs

If you read the developers blog, they changed this pretty quickly to number of unique visitors.

It's useful to note that Technorati and Amatomu have different ways of measuring the "top" blogs.

Amatomu (currently) uses the number of hits to measure the top blogs, whereas Technorati uses the number of links (and, I suspect, some sort of reputation system to avoid the spamblogs).

Both systems have ways to game the system, although the links method is probably more resilient.

A hybrid of the two is probably going to work well, and I'm fairly certain Amatomu are on their way there (what with their as-yet-unreleased "Talking Points" feature...).

yeah agree with you... and we need to try and get more political blogs to join. Hopefully by making it a separate category we'll inspire more to join...? ie get more readers to read the political jobs.

re: the definition of a blog. its a tough one and there are various definitions and it is something we are keeping our eye on...ie group blogs vs single blogs ; commercial vs non-commercial...and we can address that by displaying differently... its not an easy one to solve...and if there are any ideas please get hold of us and add to the discussion

Rafiq, I think you have it right when you say that politics is everywhere in SA. Having huge numbers of political parties pointing fingers, making noise and generally trying to advance its own interests, Souht African politics is quite messy on the whole.

But I think that's a good thing, for the most part, provided the parties' interests coincide with South Africans in general. The difference in the US is that there are only two sides: the Democrats and the Republicans. Every now and then an independent will run, but the focus of political activity and blogging is quite different. It's a lot easier to delineate us and them, making it a lot easier to find a big audience on some side of the fence.

I hope that goes some way towards answering your question, Laurence.
