Poorly-Chosen Caption of the Day

SENEGAL – IS THAT NEAR WELKOM?
From the current edition of The Weekender, printed atop a picture showing US President George W. Bush dancing with a Senegalese dance troupe during a malaria awareness event at the White House.
I don’t care whether you like Bush or not, but that’s a cheap shot. If the guy really does [...]

This is Why I Haven’t Been Posting

I’ve been away on a welcome holiday at Ngwenya Lodge, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Some people go to the coast to unwind, but my drug of choice is wildlife and the bushveld. We are truly fortunate in South Africa to have some of the world’s most magnificent game reserves and lodges, and we’d [...]

The French Become Sensible

Thank goodness that French politics has once again become sensible. Between shuffling geriatrics like Chirac who stubbornly clung to power and the status quo, and radicals of the Far Right and Left who espouse failed systems, it seemed like France was doomed to a quagmire. One of irreversible economic and social decline, brought on by [...]

Blame the Killer

One of the most galling things about the Virginia Tech shooting has been the sight of people trying to score points or squeeze the incident into their favourite political narrative. I expect some paleos are trying to make the incident about multiculturalism or immigration, and some people want to blame the usual whipping boy of [...]

A Code of Conduct for Bloggers

Is there a need for a code of conduct to regulate the way blogs maintain themselves?
Tim ‘O Reilly recently asked the question and Johan Brink answered no. However I believe that Mr Brink has missed a subtle aspect and how Mr ‘O Reilly’s suggestion is more an optional one than a call for censorship. There [...]

Irresponsible Leadership

IAS has been contacted by the Council of Foreign Relations, asking for input on whether South Africa is acting responsibly as the defacto leader in foreign relations for Africa. Readers may want to supply their input there.

We Were Wrong!

In the face of a stirring defence such as this, all of us who criticised South African foreign policy should feel suitably chastened:

Admit it: SA was right in its approach on Zimbabwe
by Ronnie Mamoepa
…However, when falsehoods are advanced that South Africa, and President Mbeki in particular, remained silent in the face of human rights abuses [...]

Paying for Nothing

Are you getting charged by your bank for facilities you don’t ever use? I certainly was and perhaps you dear reader should review whether you are as well. Especially since it translates into billions of Rands of extra revenue for local banks when they are essentially doing nothing new or extra for us as customers. [...]

Circle of Urbanisation

I got a heads up from Tom about an unusual feature of Johannesburg urbanisation. Anyone else noticed the circular form of urbanisation in Johannesburg as per Google Maps?

Interestingly the ‘circle’ actually incorporates Midrand and Centurion. The development to the north east of it it Pretoria itself. The centre of the ball is oddly enough Sandton, [...]

Government and Individuals Debt

Is there an inverse relationship between the central government’s indebtedness versus the average individual’s indebtedness within a certain nation? Admittedly such a relationship doesn’t necessarily hold for certain nations but I can’t find details confirming or disproving such a relationship.
What draws my attention to this is how highly indebted the average individual is in the [...]

Get Rid of Them

I don’t care whether he says he’s sorry. Just get rid of him. Get rid of her too in fact.
I admit I have a strong hatred of nepotism and people giving into greed when conflicts of interest arise, due to my past experiences. Indeed, it doesn’t matter if it’s the head of the World Bank. [...]

Changing Opinions on Unchanged Rates

I’ve found it quite interesting to note that Greta Steyn’s opinion on the recent interest rate decisions from the Reserve Bank has completely swung around. In the past she’s criticised the rate increases and yet now is instead critical of the fact that interest rates won’t be going up – at least for now.
The above [...]

Ponzification

Are many debt finance schemes out there actually Ponzi schemes in disguise? The Economist begged that question in its Buttonwood column (subscription required) a short while back and it seems to be a critical one.
Indeed, for those not in the know a Ponzi scheme is where a so-called business person convinces customers that they will [...]

Supply and Demand in Action

Food prices are up. Petrol prices are up. House prices are up. Unfortunately you also need to get ready for electricity price rises as well, at least in the medium term.
This isn’t some conspiracy though between government and big business to leach consumers as some may rant. Unfortunately South African electricity prices are indeed too [...]
