Ifail to understand why people cannot agree with the affirmative action programme. It is nothing different from the one in Australia, Canada, Italy and even Malaysia. In fact, the malaysian programme is like ours.

It appears that White South Africans who are against AA do not have an understanding of what the programme entails. It is a programme which was implemented in Canada, Australia, Britain and even in Malaysia. In fact, the New Economic Policy of Malaysia was aimed addresing the similar programmes which South Africa has: ensuring that the resources are distributed amongst the majority. If we have 52% of females in the country, it does not make sense to have only 10% of them represented in our workplaces. The same goes for all other groups. And there is nothing wrong with someone needing a push because they never had the same privelege with the White males in south Africa. As for persons with disabilities like myself, I feel disappointed in the lack of implementation by companies on its affirmative action

I couldn't post this earlier today from the office. Hope it goes through now.

Laurence says: "The real question, of course, is why Eskom is awarding a position like "project engineering specialist" on the basis of race at all."
--------------------
You've answered your own question. There is no reason at all, and then there is, which is why it's a necessary evil.

Inwardly, I'm against AA because it presupposes that one person is weaker than another and needs a push, although I recognise that we need to "equate" riches across the South-African demographic rainbow.

AA is all the more wrong when one realises that it sometimes imitates the Apartheid practice whereby a job went to someone because they were white, or coloured.

Well, I used to work with Eskom people every now and then - none said anything about the overly black oriented AA policy, but many of the non black employees mentioned to me they would probably be leaving the company as they felt there was no future for them in the company.

There is also the hiring in of old skills to reduce the chronic shortages - but some Saffers I have met here in the UK have been approached with contract terms that basically makes it clear they are not really wanted, but rather grudgingly needed (the terms are something like 'come back and help, and when suitable AA replacements are available, your contract will be ended'). It's no wonder a good portion of those people are dotted around the planet.

Very well said.

Clearly affirmative action is being abused here.

Whether it's Eskom or the alleged victim doing it, it makes South African AA's flaws seem rather obvious.
