S101’s Maiden Voyage

For all the media controversy a few months back when it was thought that the SA Navy’s submarines could not be sailed direct to SA due to a lack of trained crew, the delivery voyage of the S101, the SAN’s first submarine, is receiving remarkably little attention. I suppose the fact that it’s sailing to [...]

I Guess Self-Defence Is Okay (Sometimes)

I’ve complained before about the way our criminal justice systems treats crime victims who defend themselves, so in the interests of fairness, it’s worth mentioning one case where the police got it right (and with unusual speed, at least for the SAPS):

Pretoria police say a Garsfontein man who shot and killed a suspected robber will [...]

Pahad’s Double Standards

Yes, that would be our own Deputy Foreign Minister, Aziz Pahad, who seems to be making a habit of being contradictory lately. This time, it’s about Hamas:
“Those of us who have been consistently clamouring for democracy cannot now but accept the results of those elections. We cannot fight for democracy then challenge the results of [...]

Headline for the Day

“There is no power crisis, says Mbeki” – iAfrica.com
In tomorrow’s newspaper, Thabo Mbeki will explain why Aeon Flux was an underrated movie that had great artistic merit, why the Atkins diet is legit, and why you really can make money selling Amway products.

Talking in the Clouds

More proof that Telkom’s monopoly is getting out of hand, or symbolic of where their true thoughts about the SA consumer are?

How will they try sue PwC?

As the Kebble scandal progresses the forensic auditors of Randgold are apparently recommending that the management of the company that Kebble plundered sue the original company external auditors, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), for the inappropriate audit opinion they expressed.
PwC expressed an unqualified audit opinion (roughly meaning a clean bill of health) originally on Randgold’s accounts when they actually contained hundreds of millions [...]

You say Potatoe…

You’d think the media would report the same story consistently. Guess again.
Fin24:
South Africa has slipped three places to number 37 in the global IT rankings, but closed the gap to one spot on its closest African rival Tunisia.

Business Report:
South Africa placed 37th overall, ranking far higher than other countries on the African continent.

So who’s right?

Phenomenon or Forgery?

General knowledge time. Is the above a real phenomenon or just someone’s work in Photoshop? If it’s the former, what is it called?

The Many Faces of Jacob Zuma

I finally got around to reading the Sowetan interview with Jacob Zuma. It really is a most extraordinary piece of writing, one that I would strongly recommend to anyone with more than a passing interest in South African politics. Some of the highlights:
Zuma the gossip-columnist. Zuma has apparently internalised the old American tradition that, once [...]

Sure, I’ll Bite…

Zablogger has penned yet another glib post on speeding:

Durban newspapers are once again full of letters from people complaining about being soft targets for the city police speed enforcement officers. Question – if you’re a soft target why not prevent yourself from being a target at all – just stop speeding?
One wonders what advice Zablogger [...]

Affirmative Action

The debate continues at Gauteng Blog and Mzansi Afrika.
For the record (and without wanting to completely endorse either side), I think Rethabile misreads the Employment Equity Act. He writes that “equal opportunities [are] actually good, it is progressive, and it falls in line with the general direction of the eleven-year-old South Africa”, and you certainly [...]

Brett Kebble

South Africa has the goods. It’s extraordinary just how dirty the man was, especially when considering the extent of the praise he was showered with in the immediate aftermath of his death. For the record, I was never on board with the Brett Kebble-hagiography crowd.

What is Cybercrime?

As part of a short presentation I jointly have to give on Wednesday night I have to define the concept of IT crime. The more common term is cybercrime but surprisingly I find conflicting or lacking definitions.
The local Electronic Communications and Transactions Act defines it as “unauthorised access to, interception of or interference with data”. A Princeton definition [...]

How to Build an Airbus A380 in 7 Minutes

This has been out for a while but it’s still worthwhile – a sped up video of how the Airbus A380 was built (ADSL connection speeds or higher required).
