Potential Water Ice in Martian Crater

Water Ice at the Martian North Pole is thought to have been photographed:
It would still need a proper visit for confirmation and unfortunately the two active Mars probes are too far away to get there. But it might be worthwhile to send another probe.
The presence of existing water on Mars would be a boon to [...]

Exam Strategy II

The following email comes from a personal friend who lectures in the commerce field as well at another tertiary institution in response to my earlier post on exam technique. I believe it’s worthwhile to post it here too.
He also highlighted the following worrying aspect which I am seeing as well:
This applies to those who have [...]

Exam Strategy

There’s a quaint old saying in life: ‘roughly thirty-three percent of people will like you*, roughly thirty-three percent will not care an iota about you and roughly thirty-three percent will dislike you’. Such an analysis though is notably true in exams, especially in the harder and meatier subjects.
More specifically, it’s important to realise that tertiary [...]

Global Warming III

For the record, I don’t know of anyone – libertarian or otherwise – who seriously disputes that some sort of climate change is taking place. But while I’m not a scientist myself (and certainly open to correction on this), I understand that there are several attendant questions that are still being debated in scientific circles. [...]

“American Cultural Hegemony”

Why do people insist on confusing the actions of governments with those of private actors (like individuals or businesses) within a country? This flawed mindset becomes particularly evident whenever the issue of “cultural domination” comes up, as happened to me a few days ago when some fool in my IR class tried to convince me [...]

Beyond Kyoto

Like Wayne, I believe global warming to be a reality that we cannot ignore, though I don’t believe that the Kyoto Protocol is necessarily the best option. Unfortunately, despite some credible opposition to it, it has reached a level of orthodoxy in the public imagination as the only possible solution – and opposing Kyoto is [...]

HMAS Anzac

Those who were more observant than usual during the singing of the Australian anthem at last week’s game at Ellis Park might have noticed that it was sung by a woman wearing a naval uniform with “HMAS Anzac” on her hat. For most, this would have been unremarkable, but for ship and navy buffs it [...]

EU/US Farms Will Not Collapse

EU and US agricultural producers will not be wiped out by cheap third world competition – contrary to what the protectionist lobby groups there claim.
Indeed, they intentionally play on fears of food security and the like to protect themselves from foreign competition while securing gratuitious subsidies. They can survive and actually continue to prosper without.
Consideron [...]

Ramping up the Growth Rate

While I’ve given up on Mbeki on aspects like AIDS and Zimbabwe his main redeeming feature is his entrenchment of what many tar as ‘fiscal conservative’ economic thinking.
In that regard the announcement to try push South Africa’s annual economic growth rate from 4% per annum towithin the next few years is to be welcomed. That [...]

Global Warming is a Reality

Contrary to what many American bound libertarians may argue about climate change I do indeed believe that global warming is real. This isn’t something new to me as I already came to this conclusion a while back. But I also believe that South Africa is on the frontline of this global phenomenon whereas America is [...]

Quote for the Day

“When I look at the way in which Mbeki has handled Zimbabwe and the AIDS crisis within his own borders, and his consistent refusal to speak out of turn about despots elsewhere on the continent, I can’t help myself from wondering if he doesn’t secretly hate his fellow black Africans, despite his penchant for accusing [...]

M&G Blogspot Watch

“It’s laughable that Britain is worried. The solution is so simple people. Even for simple people, people. It’s elementary…..Pack up and go home. Extricate yourselves from the myriad of fingers-in-pies you have and bugger off. Leave the countries that don’t belong to you and immigrate. The influx of Britons should be calming on your nerves. [...]

Apologies for Absence

Apologies for my lack of writing in the past while. Lecturing and studying is quite demanding, although quite rewarding. I’m heading for the 100th lecturing hour mark already and while I exhausted myself today I suspect I also did so for most of the students. The section that had to be covered concerns liquidations and [...]

Mugabe Actually Seeking $2 Billion

SW Radio Africa reportsthat Mugabe is now not only asking South Africa for $1 Billion in credit, but also China simultaneously.
As the article states, if he gets both – and he likely will since our dear President Mbeki has already seen fit to quickly extend the desired $1 Billion to him – he’ll have enough [...]
