Following the efforts of the Google Sightseeing blog to document all major global landmarks visible via Google Maps’ satellite imagery, Marc has started up a local version called Satellite ZA.

Obviously the focus is on local landmarks and while Google Maps still has to properly update its records for South Africa (for example half of Cape Town and Jo’burg are still at very low rez) there should be some interesting details available. We wish him luck and hope he keeps it updated regularly.

I was meantime under the impression that the CN Tower was the tallest freestanding structure on land in the world. It’s not. The honour goes to the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, after repairs also increased its height. More reading about the various categories of tallest structures is available here meantime.
