The SABC’s Sweet Deal

Vaz writes about the SABC and etv trying to shut down MNET Open Time, which they say has an “unfair advantage”. This won’t affect me personally, since the only Open Time show I ever watched was Buffy, and that’s finished. Still, you have to marvel at the chutzpah of the taxpayer-subsidised SABC. They fund their [...]

Bloukrans Pass, Southern Cape

Here’s a bit of advice when on holiday: Get Lost – on purpose.
The image below is from a hidden path on the beautiful Bloukrans Pass on the Garden Route in the Southern Cape (near the Tsitsikama), but it’s not on the toll road route that’ll take Bungee Jump enthusiasts to the largest jump in the [...]

Freedom Day

Watching the news footage of ordinary Iraqis lining up to vote, I can’t help but be reminded of the scenes from South Africa’s first multi-racial election in 1994. Both elections were marred by violence. (South Africans often forget just how much violence; at the time, parts of KZN were on the verge of civil war.) [...]

Letters from Iraq

In the Red Zone:
We bloggers intend, or at least hope, that our words are read by as wide an audience as possible. Today, though, I write with but a few people in mind – friends, acquaintances, strangers I met in Iraq during my all-too-brief travels through the country. People whose faces and voices will [...]

The Iraqi Elections

Well, here we go. Let’s hope like hell that the elections are a success. Apart from that, I’ll reserve any commentary until after they’ve taken place.

More Skyscrapers

I’ve had so much fun playing with the skyscraper site that Wayne linked to that I thought I’d share some diagrams with you guys:
Tallest buildings in the world (including towers)
Tallest buildings in South Africa (including towers)
Tokyo Tower vs. Eiffel Tower
Freedom Tower vs. WTC
Hillbrow Tower vs. CN Tower
Voortrekker Monument vs. Statue of Liberty
One of the things [...]

Not Black Enough

Non-story of the day: Nigeria says South Africa is “semi-black, quasi-black… the Diet Coke of black”, and should therefore be completely barred from getting the “African seat” on the UN Security Council.
Let’s tally up the score here. The Nigerian government is one of the most corrupt on the planet, it’s sitting on an ethnic powder [...]

Irony Alert

In the past six months Mr Mbeki has carried out a series of personal attacks on soft targets, mostly through the medium of a long weekly column which is posted on the ANC’s website. He first lashed out at Tony Trahar, the boss of Anglo American, the biggest firm in South Africa, for saying that [...]

In Defence of Shout-Shows

Americans love to whine about their trashy political shows. You know, Crossfire, Hannity & Colmes, that sort of thing. Who can forget that famous incident where some comedian went on Crossfire and dissed the hosts, or something. I didn’t pay much attention to the story at the time, but apparently it was considered “important”.
Anyway, I’ve [...]

The Coming Air War

In previous posts, I’ve discussed the possibility of strikes against Iran from a broad, weapons-proliferation perspective. But it’s also interesting to look at it from a narrower angle; as a military problem. Iran has claimed that any American attack will be met with “astonishing” retaliation. How much of that is truth and how much is [...]

Details on the Worlds Ten Tallest Buildings

For all fellow skyscraper enthusiasts, here’s aof the ten tallest buildings in the world.
However definitions do differ between ‘building’ and ‘structure’. To my understanding the CN Tower in Toronto is the tallest man-made structure in the world when you include the length of its communication spire.

Three Hundred Comments for One Post

Keo has to be one of the most active weblogs that I know of – especially since its post over the alleged road rage incident involving Schalk Burger and dubiously reported on by the Cape Times receivedin the space of less than two days.
That’s also higher than some of the most popular blogs on the [...]

Gotta Run

I was hoping to blog about Iranian military capability today, but I’m out of time, so that’ll have to wait until tomorrow. I have some errands to run, and then I’m going off to see the Russian Circus. (Yay!)
In the mean time, if you want something intersting to read, check out this article in Policy [...]

Unexpected Oscar Snub

I must admit I’m highly surprised that Fahrenheit 9/11even as The Passion’s nomination performance met predictions. That’s not because F9/11 was a particularly fantastic production. More because of Hollywoods well known opposition to Republican stances that similarly correlates with Moore’s.
Ultimately Moore fell on his own sword by not entering F9/11 into the documentary category where [...]
