Cosatu II

Mal Morrow enunciates what I presume will become the new conventional wisdom on Cosatu and the ANC: they’ve both decided to ditch the alliance, but neither of them wants to be seen as the one that finally pulled the plug. So instead, they’re each going to send in their most bellicose spokesman and try to [...]

Collapse of the Dollar Order?

At the time of writing this, less than R5.80 will buy you a US $1. And again, I’ll reiterate that the Rand appreciation is especially enjoyable if you’re a South African consumer or one intending on travelling overseas (moreso with all those gloating expats working overseas seeing their earnings slide in Rand terms). Getting twice [...]

Mbeki on Women Abuse

Click here to read the speech that Thabo Mbeki delivered at the opening ceremony of the “16 Days of Activism” campaign against women abuse.
It’s a pretty speech. But when it comes to women abuse, the president sometimes seems a bit… conflicted. Bear in mind that this is coming from the same man who said he [...]

The Substance of Tutu’s Criticism

Frankly, I think Tutu was wrong about a lot – especially his criticism of the ANC’s macroeconomic policy, and his attack on Trevor Manuel. But let’s not dwell on that. Also, let’s ignore his criticism of the ANC’s much-maligned policies on AIDS and Zimbabwe. We all know that the government has screwed up majorly in [...]

The Cosatu Angle

Troubles have been brewing between the Cosatu and the ANC for a while now. First they clashed over Zimbabwe, then Zwelinzima Vavi came out and admitted that their relationship with the ANC doesn’t help Cosatu in anyway (so why stick with it, eh?), and now, adding insult to injury, they’ve come out in support of [...]

The Perfect Storm

South Africa seems to be in the midst of a political crisis. Bishop Tutu started it with his much-publicised criticism of Mbeki’s government, and now Cosatu and the opposition have both joined in.

It’s Getting Hot Tonight

And by that, by more than just the weather temperature.

At least living in Jo’burg is interesting, that’s between a friend’s shooting, cable thefts, blackouts and the above fire just down the road from the Wanderers clubhouse that recently burnt down.

Goldfields vs Harmony

Goldfields has struck out yet again in its attempt at legally blocking Harmony’s hostile takeover attempt. American courts turned down it’s attempt to rule the bid illegal and rightfully so.
It’s also the fourth defeat at attempting to block the bid in the courts and suggests that Harmony is increasingly likely to succeed.
Still, several analysts have [...]

Caution on Currency Markets

It’s been a wonderful sight seeing the Rand break through the R6:$1 barrier – or at least from my perspective, I’m sure there any many exporters grumbling about that.
But how far can it go, or will it stop and reverse? Truth be told I’m not the gambling type and I can’t really forecast where it’ll [...]

A Personal Message

I attended the first day of the conference on Islam and, as expected, it was interesting. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to cut the conference short. An immediate family member of my girlfriend died today, which means that, for now, I’ve got more important things to worry about. I’m also going to be taking a [...]

Woops

Andrew Sullivan falls for an Onion-style* parody that claims The Passion of the Christ is being turned into a videogame. You’d think a story that wacky would at least merit checking out.

Strictly speaking, one major difference between The Onion and The Swift Report is that The Onion is actually funny. I guess that gives Sullivan [...]

How They See Us Dept.

A reader sent me a link to this weird editorial by Bryan Rostron which appeared in the Sunday Independent. Rostron complains about the bad press South Africa gets in the international media – which may be a valid complaint, although it’s not exactly apparent what, if anything, we’re supposed to do about it. Even among [...]

Just So You Know…

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be attending a three-day conference on Jihad. Apparently, there’ll be presentations by some fairly well-known scholars from the Middle-East. It should be interesting to get an Islamic perspective on what’s going on in the world. If it is, I’ll write up a pr?s for the blog.

Being Made More Crime Aware

One of the implications of having one’s friend shot at home is that it does make you more aware of the crime locally. But while it’s saddening to hear him say ‘’it’s his own fault’ and that it was ‘because he’s been too casual in the garden in the past’ (for goodness sake man, you [...]
