Cool Cheetah Conservation

Paid the de Wildt Cheetah conservation camp a visit, was the worth time and the locals were quite happy to smile for the camera.

The River in Egypt Runs Dry

Since 9/11 one of the recurring themes in the conspiracy communities and several Middle Eastern countries alike has been the habit of claiming the event to have been orchestrated by Jews.
There are several variants of such theories; one includes a claim that Jews knowingly stayed away from the World Trade Centre en mass, indicating prior [...]

Media Stupidity Dept.

Did anybody see the Citizen’s dumb, sensationalist headline on the Indonesian paleontology find? It was, and I quote:
HOBBIT BONES FOUND
Yes, I realise that the rest of the media has been unable to resist the “hobbit-like” comments. But you know, there’s a huge difference between “hobbit bones” and “hobbit-like bones”.

Could Libertarians Make a Difference?

With the US election less than a week away, the short season of endorsements of the candidate from various publications is upon us. The Economist is no exception to this rule but its endorsement is judging by the reaction and the potential impact it could carry. That’s because while it is classified as a ‘conservative’ [...]

A Job Well Done

I’m rather fond of mineral water. Laurence thinks I’m an idiot for spending the extra cash on the liquid as against buying a cheaper and more satisfying Coke in his view, but I don’t intend to relent on my tastes.
That same mineral water has also been selling for the same price at well over a [...]

Stuff I Learned at Auto Africa

(aka the promised car-blogging.)
1. The Chrysler 300C rocks. It looks even better in real life than it does in the photos. The interior isn’t bad either – not quite up to Mercedes standards, but it’ll do. The underpinnings are taken from a Mercedes E-Class, except it’s better than the E-Class because:
[list][*]It looks way cooler
[*]It has [...]

Nothing to Wine About

Dear reader, today has been a day of pain and stress for me and as such I cannot write a deep thinking entry comtemplating the deeper meaning of life contained within a boson sub-atomic particle. There therefore won’t be any contemplation of the potential application of ‘twin boson cannons’ for military purposes. Come to think [...]

Just So You Know…

I’m taking Wednesday off to visit Auto Africa, so I’ll leave you in Wayne’s capable hands. Tune in on Thursday for some car-blogging.

SA’s Conservative Approach to Africa

A while back, someone asked me whether I think South Africa has become an essentially conservative force in African politics. It’s an interesting question. Conservatism, at its most literal, is value-neutral, since it just means keeping things the way they are. In a Western liberal democracy, that makes conservatism a good thing: the vanguard against [...]

Cougars Sent Into Iraq

Here’s a cool story:
US Marines buy South African battle wagon.
The Cougar, which is bullet-, explosion-, and mine-resistant, will apparently be used to transport engineers in Iraq. Hey, I’d certainly feel safer in one of these than in a Humvee.
It’s nice to know that, in at least one small way, this country is doing something to [...]

Gauteng’s Wonder Factor

I’d recommend a visit to the above Wonder Caves by all intrepid travellers, especially local Gautengites. It’s located within the Rhino and Lion Park 50 kilometers North West out of Johannesburg on Beyers Naude. That same park obviously has the animals described in its name plus all other assortments of herbivores and Crocs.
Unfortunately there aren’t [...]

More on Outsourcing

Abiola Lapite agrees with me on the outsourcing issue, and also features a cool story about a guy who saved his own life by outsourcing his medical care to India.
Now, compare that to the strident propaganda at OutsourceOutrage.com, an anti-outsourcing site run by a bunch of trade union hacks. I was amused to see the [...]

The PETA Principle

According to Johnathan Cherry, Charlize Theron will appear in one of PETA’s anti-fur ads. Sigh… I guess it was inevitable. Charlize is a bona fide Hollywood star now, and everyone knows that you’re not a real movie star unless you support at least one stupid lefty social cause.
As far as fashionable Hollywood causes go, the [...]

Socialism Is Still Popular

And not just among the “working masses” either. Check out this forum thread, in which a bunch of white, upper-class ADSL users – pretty much the epitome of the bourgeoisie – clamor for the nationalisation of Telkom.
(And yes, I am making an assumption that the majority of ADSL customers are white and upper-class. If you [...]
