About Commercial Space Travel

Abiola Lapite is feeling snarky and rightly so. Nature has published a rather unscientific swipe at evil libertarians for daring to suggest that privately funded space travel could achieve more for the average person than State drvien versions veiled in militaristic intentions has. Abiola criticizes its unusual foray into the unscientific
Vaz meantime notes Richard Branson’s [...]

For the Record

In case you missed it one of South Africa’s parastatal has done particularly well with its results. Rand Water has just reported a R375 million profit for the year on the back of growing volumes and profit margins.
It seems then to be sufficiently well run to maintain the status quo of state ownership in this [...]

Financial Year End Fiddling

The 30th of September. What’s so special about it?
Nothing really for the cause of the greater humanity but it can mean a great deal for local companies, being one of the most favoured dates for closing local companies financial year ends in preparation for the ‘annual financial statements’. I’m sure many would regard the topic [...]

Geopolitics Thought for the Day

Everyone says that China will be the next superpower after America starts to fade. But one problem that the Chinese will always have to reckon with is their geography. One of the biggest advantages that America has always enjoyed is a geographical location that makes military attack almost impossible. China, by contrast, has one of [...]

There Must be Something Better than the UN

Just what is wrong with the United Nations? Quite a lot to be frank. So much that it would take a substantial deal of time to explain all the technical aspects. The condensed version is that it’s a weak and bungling organization. One used by various nations to simply further their will or politics – [...]

Gun Control Madness

If there’s one issue that is able to unite all South Africans, it’s the gun issue. Black and white, we both luurve our guns.
Which is why stories like this one come as no surprise to me. A group of black gun-owners were protesting the draconian Firearms Control Act, and the government responded by sending in [...]

Quote for the Day

“Women who wear miniskirts want to be raped, and we will give them what they want.” – “Licandza”, speaking on behalf of what appears to be a serious pro-rape movement comprised of Swazi bus conductors. I am not making this up.

Spies.com

The South African Secret Service has launched a website. Ooh, how exciting!
Just kidding. It’s actually an exceptionally dull read.
A sample: “Professionalism: To strive for innovative, personal performance based on the requirements of assignment completion, timeliness, self-discipline, objectivity and adherence to tradecraft principles which includes sobriety of mind and thought at all times”… excuse me while [...]

You Just Can’t Win

When it comes to COSATU, sometimes one can’t help get the impression that nothing is ever good enough. That’s after they published a statement opposing the potential Barclays purchase of ABSA.
It’s been a long hard slog to increase the appeal of the country to Foreign Direct Investment or FDI of a capital nature. The lack [...]

Squeezing Into the Security Council

Hands up everyone who seriously thinks that South Africa is going to get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council? Right, you guys are all idiots. Go read another blog that is better suited to your intellect.
For everyone still here: Who of you believe that South Africa should get a permanent seat?
This [...]

Growing Doubts on Crime Stats

Government exists to fill in the gaps that the private sector cannot – at least that’s the conventional wisdom on social services. But when it comes to crime, it seems the opposite is true. There is growing distrust for the reliability of the public police, compared to private security groups and NGO’s.

What’s Wrong With the SANDF?

My visit to Waterkloof AFB yesterday got me thinking a bit more seriously about the state of the SANDF. Everyone seems to agree that there’s a problem with it, but there’s little consensus on what the problem really is. Here’s my candidate: too much emphasis on high-tech weapons systems.
Consider the Gripen. It’s a nice plane [...]

Best Wishes for Yom Kippur

I suppose it’s only fair that I wish all Jewish readers, whether they see this during or after the event, a good fast for Yom Kippur. And yes, even though I am secular and writing here during the fast, I do partake in the actual act of fasting each year.
